The Move-Out Cleaning Checklist That Protects Your Deposit

April 16, 2026 Johana's Cleaning Services LLC

Security deposit disputes almost never come down to whether the floors were swept. They come down to a predictable handful of places that inspectors check and tenants skip, because those places are invisible until somebody opens a door or pulls out an appliance.

Inside the oven is number one. It is the single most commonly cited item on move-out inspections, and it is also the one people most often decide to skip because it takes real time and the right product. The refrigerator is a close second — including the shelves, the drawers, the door seals, and underneath.

Cabinet and drawer interiors come next. Once your things are out, every crumb and ring left behind is visible. The same goes for closets, which usually need the shelving wiped and the floor vacuumed after everything is removed.

Bathrooms get inspected more carefully than anything else in the unit. Grout in the shower and around the tub, hard water on the glass and fixtures, the toilet base and behind it, and the exhaust fan cover. These are the places soap scum and mineral buildup collect and they will not come off with a general-purpose spray.

Then there is the damage that is really just dirt. Scuff marks along baseboards and walls, dust on top of door frames, and the outlines left where furniture sat for years all read as wear and tear to an inspector when they are actually cleanable. Getting those off is often the difference between a full deposit and a partial one.

The best time to do all of this is when the unit is completely empty and before your walkthrough is scheduled. If you would rather hand it off, we do move-out cleaning across Westchester, Putnam, Rockland, and Dutchess. Call (914) 707-0643 for a flat-rate quote.
